TOL BEIT MIDRASH FOR LIFELONG JEWISH LEARNING
ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES – Winter 5772/2012
Wednesday evenings: February 15, 22 & 29
5:00 – 5:55 p.m. BEGINNING HEBREW FOR ADULTS with Risa Strauss
This class, a continuation of adult Hebrew from the Fall, began with the basics of reading and understanding Hebrew. Ask Risa if this is the right class for you.
6:00 – 6:55 p.m. CONTINUING HEBREW with Risa Strauss
Using a conversational Hebrew text as well as well as Aleph Isn’t Enough, we will continue to improve our conversation and prayer skills, grow our vocabulary and develop a better understanding of the language. This is the second half of last Fall’s course.
6:00 – 6:55 p.m. THE WORLD BEYOND: JEWISH VIEWS OF THE AFTERLIFE with Rabbi Sanford Marcus
In this course, we will discuss Jewish views of the afterlife. The focus of the first class will be what the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible) says about what happens after we die. In the second class, the focus will switch to the era of the Talmud. Finally, in week 3, we will discuss the writings of the medieval and modern philosophers. Reference lists and course outlines will be provided to all registrants.
7:00 – 7:55 p.m. REAL HOUSEWIVES OF THE BIBLE with Rabbi Leah Doberne-Schor
What was it really like to ba a Jewish woman in the Bible? Were women always subservient? What sort of power did they have, and how did they wield it? How did they shape the future of the Jewish people? Come learn about some well-known (and some lesser-known) women in the Bible.
8:05 – 9:00 p.m. INTRODUCTION TO JUDAISM with Rabbi Sherman
Introduction to Judaism provides an opportunity to learn about the Jewish religion, traditions and practices, holidays and life-cycle ceremonies, culture and history, as well as basic values and beliefs. This course is open to everyone: for those who feel they have forgotten much of what they studied in religious school years ago, for those who grew up Jewish but have never had the opportunity to study their religion as adults, and for those who are interested in becoming Jewish or simply want to know what Judaism is all about. This course began in the Fall and will continue through the Spring. New students are welcome.
